An ODD Sunday

Posted: May 23, 2011 in Races, Rogue Run

Today was the day, the day that I penciled in to my calendar (just using the phrase there — Google Calendar doesn’t have a pencil) almost 4 months ago.  Today was the culmination of my Spring “season” or training plan. I took modest but realistic steps to ensure I was in shape over the past four months and prepared for today’s Oddyssey Half Marathon — and it felt GREAT!

The reason I decided to run was because it’s ‘not your average bear’ type of race.

  1. Prizes for best costume.

    Orange and Yellow Crayola Crayons

  2. Celebratory beers.
  3. Oddyssey draft glass.
  4. Oddyssey Race Medal that doubles as a bottle opener.

  5. Obstacles/Puzzles.

The Oddyssey Half-Marathon is in its second year, and definitely got a great turnout this year. One thousand five hundred and thirty-eight registered runners took to the course today, while yours truly opted to rogue run this race. It’s becoming more evident that rogue-running has become way to test out whether a race is really worth the hassle

So I decided to just make Sunday fun. I had a couple friends that registered for this event, Natalie and Devon, who made great companions throughout the race. The race started at roughly 7:05 and most of the course was fla

At the 4-mile mark I thought to myself “Why on God’s green Earth did I decide to run this morning?”

Then I started looking for the obstacle course. It finally showed up somewhere after the 8th mile. It was an inflatable gymboree dive/crawl/slide situation made for adults. It probably took about 30 seconds to complete, tops. Not exactly what I was expecting, but fun nonetheless.

Somewhere after the 11th mile I saw there was some sort of large game of Jenga that you would win prizes from? I’m not exactly sure, I was too tired to participate.

About the last half mile of the race was uphill which is always a great  test to the will of any runner.

All in all.. the race is a pretty sweet idea. Great giveaways. Music was okay, and the course was pretty simple. Guess I’ll be getting an official time next year.
